Becoming an artist has been a surprise for me and also a very exciting personal journey that has enriched my life. I was born in Latvia and learned my handicraft skills (needlecraft, knitting/crocheting/sewing) in order to be able to make my own unique clothing.
All my formal education is in mathematics, including a PhD degree in Theoretical Computer Science. When faced with a necessity to visualize hyperbolic geometry, I suddenly realized that I can combine my mathematician's expertise with my handicraft skills and crocheted models of the hyperbolic plane were born in 1997.
Since then I have done lots of explorations in various fibers, colors, shapes and still continue my journey happily sharing it with others who got interested in these shapes through my work. Some of my experiences are written up in my book Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes (CRC Press/AK Peters, 2009).
