The white strip paintings are still evolving. At some point I felt I needed the freedom to have different styles and processes within each painting while still having a cohesive body of work. By breaking up the surface with a white strip I can venture into those different styles and combine opposing images while still having cohesion to the series.
I work from my subconscious, letting the images come out as I progress. I do use certain figures, cityscapes and places in mind serving as themes when I begin each picture. These themes influence all aspects of the picture making process in some way, from composition to format to paint application. For me, I need a tie to memory or place in my work so there is some of myself there to have an individual voice.
