I have been painting all of my adult life. I am a figurative painter; what I see each day makes me think about how to translate my experiences to canvas. I generally search for a theme: most recently trees and before that chairs. I do sketches and paintings and often photograph my subjects. I try to understand the mood or aspect of the subject that attracted me.
As I work on canvases in my studio, I look to the abstract work of artists like Joan Mitchell and Richard Diebenkorn and wish to capture the immediacy that these artists evoke. A canvas is finished when all parts of the painting are vibrant. There are times that areas of the painting appear to have a problem, when the elimination or enhancement resolves the eye's conflict. Solving those problems is the act of finishing a painting. Yet, it is not always easy to resolve the conflicts, and my goal in painting is to experience the clarity of vision that allows me to make joyous decisions about color and form.
