Community Arts Partnership Awards $8,000 in Locally Funded Grants
June 24, 2008 (ITHACA, NY)—The Community Arts Partnership is proud to announce the recipients of the 2008 United Arts Fund (UAF) Grants. The UAF program re-launched this year, awarding $8,000 in locally funded grants: two $1,000 awards for individual artists and four organization grants of $1,500 each.
Artist fellowships were granted to visual artist Treacy Ziegler of Newfield and literary artist Fran Markover of Ithaca. Organizational grants were awarded to the Ink Shop Printmaking Center, The Ithaca Community Choruses, Music’s Recreation, and the New York State Early Music Association (aka NYS Baroque).
CAP’s new Executive Director, Brett Bossard, sees the United Arts Fund as an additional way the organization can strengthen the County’s already thriving arts community: “The United Arts Fund not only promotes Tompkins County’s arts, but also provides practical support to area artists. In addition to funding artists and arts organizations, these grants give us another chance to connect them to the larger arts community and foster the kind of collaboration that is crucial to everyone’s success. That is what the Community Arts Partnership is all about.”
Many of CAP’s other grant programs—like the Decentralization, CAP II, and Local Capacity Building grants—are made possible through funding from the New York State Council on the Arts. Unlike those grants, the United Arts Fund depends solely on annual contributions from local businesses and individuals. Despite the UAF’s relatively modest re-launch this year, Bossard is confident the program will eventually return as an important source of support for local artists. Since its inception in 1992 the UAF has distributed more than $270,000 to arts organizations and artists.
The Community Arts Partnership serves as Tompkins County’s arts council, acting as an advocate for the arts, serving the public through resources and programs for artists and arts organizations, and encouraging collaboration among arts, education, business, civic, and government organizations. ABOUT THE GRANT RECIPIENTS:
ARTISTS FELLOWSHIPS - $1,000 each
Fran Markover (Ithaca)
20 years ago, Fran’s birthday present to herself was the commitment to work on her poems daily. Her poems have appeared in RATTLE, RUNES, Harpur’s Palate, Cider Press Review, Red Wheelbarrow, Sow’s Ear Poetry Review, Earth’s Daughters, Redactions, Mobius and Calyx. She has received a poetry residency from the Saltonstall Foundation, won the Anna Davidson Rosenburg Award in 2007 and was a finalist in Southwest Review’s formal poetry contest. This year, Fran is semi-retiring from her work as a psychotherapist.
The funds will allow Fran to fund specific expenses related to future work.
Treacy Ziegler (Newfield)
Treacy was a printmaker for many years before shifting to painting three years ago. Her work is full of saturated color and consists primarily of landscapes, interiors and birds. (She spends one day a week at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.) She says her life consists of “working in my studio and when I am not working in my studio I am thinking of working in my studio.”

ORGANIZATIONAL GRANTS - $1,500 each
Three organization received funds to support the redesign and modernization of their websites:
- The Ithaca Community Choruses consists of two community choruses, the Ithaca Community Chorus (120 members) and VOICES Multicultural Chorus (100 members). The “ICC” also has a Chamber Singers group and summer workshops. ithacacommunitychorus.clarityconnect.com
- Ink Shop Printmaking Center and Gallery also offers year round workshops, artists talks and provides space and equipment for about forty printmakers. The Ink Shop is recovering well from a difficult year! A fire at their former location prompted a move to the 2nd floor of the building owned by the Community School of Music and Arts, where a nice melding of services has arisen. www.ink-shop.org
- Music’s Recreation brings lively, casual and innovative chamber music concerts geared towards families. Educational commentary, an informal atmosphere and high quality performances combine to create a love of and new audiences for classical music. www.musrec.org
NYS Baroque is an orchestra presenting early music concerts on period instruments in Ithaca and throughout Central New York. The funds received will go towards equipment for creating professional quality recordings of their concerts. These recordings will allow the orchestra to promote themselves as a touring organization throughout the Northeast and apply for competitive grants at a national level. www.nysema.com
