Stimulus Awards for Individual Artists Included in Community Arts Partnership's Annual Arts Grants

August 19th, 2009

August 19, 2009 (ITHACA, NY)- A special set of awards for artists will be among the many grants offered by the Community Arts Partnership this fall. The recently announced "CAP Stimulus Awards for Individual Artists" will provide five local talents with $1,000 each. The creation of these awards comes fresh on the heels of news that CAP received one of the 27 American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Grant Awards through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

According to Brett Bossard, Executive Director of CAP, the Recovery Act award inspired CAP's board to re-allocate funds for these special one-time grants. Applicants may be artists of any discipline living within Tompkins County. Bossard thinks the awards will benefit more than just the recipients: "Giving out these awards will not only encourage local artists to advance their careers, it will provide them the opportunity as members of our community to help nudge the local economy back in the right direction."

In addition to the Stimulus Awards, CAP will also be offering three sets of grants funded by NYSCA. The Decentralization Grants (DEC) are for 2010 arts and cultural projects sponsored by Tompkins County not for profit organizations; CAP II Grants are for individual artists' projects in 2010 that involve the local community; and the Arts in Education "Local Capacity Building" grants are for teaching artist and teacher partnerships. These three programs have a combined total of $56,000 in awards.

Program Director, Robin Schwartz is excited to continue her work with local artists and organizations to fund projects vital to Tompkins County. "Despite budget cuts in Albany, it's great to know that our state still values the arts and their role in our communities," says Schwartz. "We're happy to be able to give out these awards again this year." Applications and guidelines for all of CAP's arts grants are available online at www.artspartner.org or at their office inside Center Ithaca.

CAP was founded in 1990 in response to a desire to strengthen and develop the County's arts and cultural community. After an exhaustive, inclusive, community cultural assessment, CAP was launched as a not-for-profit agency that would serve the public by providing services to the arts and artists of Tompkins County. For the past 19 years, CAP has done just that, helping to distribute nearly $2 million to artists and arts organizations in the community.
