This year, CAP was able to provide a GAP grant for "Voices of Freedom," an annual Ithaca City of Asylum ICOA) observation of Freedom to Read Week on September 28, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the Tompkins County Public Library. The Ithaca City of Asylum (ICOA) is part of the International Cities of Refuge Network, a worldwide network of cities of asylum. ICOA supports writers whose works are suppressed, whose lives are threatened, whose languages are endangered and whose cultures are vanishing.These writers enrich the cultural life of the Ithaca community and bring attention to enduring global struggles for freedom of expression. The writer in residence from 2015-2017 is Raza Rumi. Raza is a Pakistani policy analyst, journalist, and author. He has been a leading voice in Pakistan's public arena against extremism and human-rights violations. In March 2014, he survived an assassination attempt by political Islamists in which his driver lost his life. Within weeks, he left Pakistan and was affiliated with New America and the United States Institute of Peace. Rumi's writings are archived at
