$46,500 in Decentralization grant funds were distributed to 35 Tompkins County
not-for-profit agencies for 38 projects that encompassed theatre performances, music concerts, children’s programming, dance performances, poetry readings and visual art exhibitions.
Grant awards ranged from $450 to $2,250.

$7,500 was distributed between four artists who are doing new work and involving the community in the creation of that work in a significant way.
Christopher Morgan Loy, composer
To compose an original composition for the group Music’s Recreation which features classical performances that are family friendly.
Sue Perlgut and Christopher Julian, filmmakers
To begin a documentary on the Hospice Movement, following the success of their film “101 Ways to Retire”.
Terry Plater, Visual Artist
To engage the public in a community art making project resulting in 40 community paintings and new work by Terry.
Eric Serritella, Visual Artist
To share his journey from executive to ceramist to study in Taiwan, culminating in a show of his work.
3. LOCAL CAPACITY BUILDING: ARTS IN EDUCATION GRANTS
$9,295 was distributed to Tompkins County schools and teaching artists for collaborative partnerships in the classroom.
Dryden High School
Artist Wylie Schwartz will work with art teachers to introduce students to the history of art, the relationship between art and science with an emphasis on the history of color.
Dryden High School
Ceramists Eric Serritella and Momoko Keane’s program involves hands on projects tying into Japanese and Taiwanese culture.
BJ Martin Elementary School
Lisa Tsetse will work with pre-K students to teach D is for Dance, teaching language, narrative, peer interaction, following directions, letters.
South Hill Elementary School
Artists Andrea Hazard and Johanna van der Sterre will work with 5th graders - “Story Art Workshop” - students will learn story structure, narrative and art as a communicative tool.
Newfield Elementary School
Music Teacher Sunshine Miller has identified a need for improving the writing skills for 5th grade students.
TST BOCES
Artist Janet Locke is part of “Spririt and Kitsch” store. The project, called “Mask as Self Portrait” will work with at-risk students to use mask making to help students learn self-awareness and provide a positive venue for expression.
