"I am interested in the poetry inherent in simple and often overlooked subject matter. I am a very tactile person and so texture, color and composition excite me. Photography is close to a spiritual practice for me - one that helps me to see the world, be completely present in the moment and to share with others."
Jari Poulin has a unique bank of talents and interests that she brings to her work as a photographer. She began her career as a professional dancer, choreographer and director of dance companies and arts organizations in upstate New York and Boston.
Her long career in dance and theatre has played a significant role in the development of her aesthetic as a photographer. Light, composition, color, movement and the poetics of image are central to her work. She explores the world through her viewfinder with a choreographer's eye, looking for what in dance is called the "moment of magic."
Jari began her studies with photography as a teenager and university student and they have developed into a life long passion. While pursuing a career in dance, she continued to develop her technical and artistic skills in photography. In the fall of 2004, Jari made the life changing decision to leave her position as the CEO of Springstep Center for Traditional and Contemporary Arts in Boston in order to devote herself in her interest in photography.
She immediately created an opportunity to spend five months photo-documenting the life and workings of Yelapa, Mexico, a small and unusual fishing village in Mexico. She returns annually to document changes in this small village and has developed a number of friendships there.
Upon returning from Mexico, Jari moved to Taos, NM for two years to create a new body of work inspired by "land of enchantment" and to further cull the body of work she created in Yelapa, Mexico. Jari's work was shown extensively in Taos, New Mexico and throughout the southwest and is a part of various personal collections throughout the US. Jari now makes her home in Ithaca and operates Jari Poulin Photography. She continues to create award winning fine art work as well as create unique and distinctive work for her portrait, editorial and fashion clients.
