I give credit to Nature for composing beautiful landscapes. It is the part of the landscape that I choose to paint that speaks to my sensibilities. When I experience a powerful section of a landscape I try to capture the spirit of the place in a way that invites the viewer in and asks that they stay a while as a retreat from their present circumstances.
I am an enthralled with the sculptural surfaces of the earth, the texture of those surfaces, and the tonal and color relationships. Observation, coupled with my personal interpretation of these elements guide my efforts.
My most recent paintings focus on the viewer's opportunity to escape from their reality and travel with me to the locations in the paintings. Whether the destination is the wind swept coast of Maine, the narrow passages of Italian hill towns, the jewel colored Finger Lakes or a back yard garden, the viewer is invited to share the endless possibilities of escape.
