The photography of Dede Hatch has been part of the visual landscape for 30+ years. She had her first exhibition, as well as her first commercial advertising shoot, at the age of 16. Throughout her education, art and photography were central and she has exhibited widely.

Over time, she served as Staff Photographer at 2 colleges before launching Dede Hatch Photography in 1988. Since then her work has been published in numerous books and magazines, and has taken its place on the walls of many homes and institutions including the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell University, and the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca. She diligently and concurrently navigates the paths of personal work and commercial work, and rejoices when the 2 come together as one.

My impulse to photograph comes from a wish to remember- to create a souvenir of something for which I have no words. It also comes from a desire to involve myself in the act of photography- to collaborate with a camera, open myself to serendipity and light, and connect with the world around me. That world may be a new country or it may be my dog or my small garden. Often it is the space between things that interests me, or movement, or the patina of time. Always, I am inspired by the way that beauty and order can be distilled from the chaotic world of the ordinary simply by seeing mindfully.
