Visual Arts:

Usually, I start making a series of drawings of the same subject and then select and combine them to make a finished piece of art. I think of each of these drawings as a single pass at seeing the subject, and combined, as a perception of that subject. These images should open up and display an underlying order.

These images do not deny the value of representational means, but give weight to all the perceptions in an attempt to reach a closer approximation to the experience of seeing. They are intended to be contemplated, and follow in the tradition of the earliest art - to see the world and its patterns, and to reconcile our inner and outer selves.

Poetry:

I like limericks. They seem to spring from a source of humor deep within the human experience - combining the universal and cautionary storytelling of fables and myths, with the delivery of a standup comic.

Limericks allow the reader to recognize the pitfalls of being human from a psychologically safe distance, exposing the basic human behavior behind both the most commonplace activities, and the most pretentiously important powers and causes. I believe that humor has transcendent properties, and this belief played a large part in the works I have created.

Idea Enhancement:

The Idea Enhancement Project is a series of public exhibits exploring the use of visual imagery to stimulate creative thinking.

This project will use the visual arts as a practical tool to help meet the need for creative ideas in all fields of endeavor.

The Idea Enhancement Project is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).
