I work in both two-dimensions--primarily painting, drawing, and graphic design--and three-dimensions--sculptural pieces in a variety of media, including metal, wood, glass, and stone. My work includes both functional and non-functional pieces.

Light/shadow, line/form, and bold colors are important parts of my works. The light and shadow--and bold colors--of sunrises, flowers (and even the man-made lights of nighttime) are all focuses right now. In my sculptural work, I create abstract and semi-abstract pieces which are studies in curvilinear lines and volumes.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts: Metalwork & Jewelry from Northern Illinois University, and a Master of Arts degree in Fine Arts: Sculpture from Governors State University (IL).

I have also completed several years of post-graduate study in the field of Education at Cornell University. Born and raised in the Chicago area, I moved to Ithaca, New York, in 1978.

In addition to my fine art pieces, I've provided graphic design and marketing services to businesses, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations since 1980 through my firm Jim Harper Designs.

I'm also a singer/songwriter. While broadly in the folk genre, my repertoire is eclectic--in one set you might hear songs from Gilbert & Sullivan, Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Flanders & Swann, and John Prine, as well as traditional folk songs and my own handcrafted works.
